About

fullCIRCLE is a sustainable, multilayered program designed to assist its participants in effectively adjusting to the different challenges of college life, including those that are academic, social, professional and personal in nature, with the goal of retention. The program serves first-year and upper-class students with an emphasis in Black/African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latinx American, and Indigenous/Native American students. fullCIRCLE promotes academic success, identity development, community leadership, and social responsibility.


  1. First-Year & Transfer Mentees

    Program Overview

    fullCIRCLE first-year and transfer students are paired with upper-class students who offer guidance, provide consistent support, and serve as positive role models—critical factors in a student’s retention and overall success at SU. Mentors forge deep connections with students and offer advice on skill development , such as in networking and organizational collaboration. Mentors also provide support for academic success and intercultural exchange.

    Program Goals

    1. To provide academic resources and connections outside of the classroom, including but not limited to, time management skills, networking, resume writing workshops, and help navigating the financial aid and bursar offices on campus
    2. To connect students with a role model who shares personal success and growth opportunities
    3. To guide students through their acclimation to Syracuse University and their personal identity and cultural journey
    4. To create intentional connections with faculty, staff, employers, and alumni after the first year of the program
    5. To successfully retain students through their four years at Syracuse University

    We are now accepting first-year and transfer mentees for the 2017-18 academic year.   2. Peer Mentors

    Program Overview 

    Peer mentors are upper-class students who work with one to two first-year and/or transfer students offering guidance, providing consistent support, and serving as a positive role model – all critical factors in mentee retention and overall success at SU. Peer mentors encourage deep connections with students and skill development in networking and organizational collaboration. Peer mentors also provide support for academic success and intercultural exchange. 

    Program Goals

    1. To provide academic resources and connections outside of the classroom
    2. To help students become role models who share personal success and growth opportunities
    3. To guide students through their adjustment to Syracuse University as well as their personal identity and cultural journey

    Peer Mentor Responsibilities

    1. Attend training in August and periodic trainings throughout the semester (details provided at a later date)
    2. Make weekly contact with mentees through personal meetings, events, phone calls, email, social media, etc.
    3. Show mentees University resources and connect them to people and offices that can support their individual needs


    Peer Mentor Qualifications

    fullCIRCLE peer mentors should:

    1. Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA
    2. Be willing to learn about  the mission and work of the Office of Multicultural Affairs
    3. Be familiar with campus resources
    4. Care about the issues that affect students of color and marginalized communities
    5. Work with students so that they may be successful on campus
    6. Actively participate in all events focused on the enrichment of all fullCIRCLE participants

    Peer Mentor Compensation

    fullCIRCLE is unable to provide monetary compensation to peer mentors. However, peer mentors will be recognized for their efforts through banquets, dinners and public events. Limited funding will be available to peer mentors for engaging mentees in cultural opportunities.

  3. Faculty & Staff Mentors

    Program Overview

    Faculty and staff work with a small number of students as mentors – offering guidance, providing consistent support, and serving as a positive role model, all critical factors in our students' retention and overall success at SU. Faculty/staff mentors encourage skill development in the areas of leadership, programming, facilitation, communication, and collaboration; support academic success, career exploration, and intercultural exchange.

    Mentor Goals

    1. To provide academic resources and connections outside of the classroom
    2. To be a role model who shares personal and professional growth
    3. To guide students through their academic, social, and cultural journey

    Mentor Responsibilities

    1. Attend a summer training session and periodic meetings through the semester (details on date, time, and location will be provided accordingly)
    2. Make, at least, bi-weekly contact with mentees through personal meetings, events, phone, email, social media, office hours, etc.
    3. Provide University resources to mentees and connect them to people and offices that can support their individual needs

    Mentor Qualifications

    fullCIRCLE faculty/staff mentors should have a good understanding of the mission and work of the Office of Multicultural Affairs; be familiar with campus resources; care about the issues that affect students of marginalized communities; and be willing to work with students in intentional ways to be successful on campus.

    Mentor Compensation

    fullCIRCLE is unable to provide monetary compensation to mentors for their time. However, mentors will be recognized for their efforts through banquets, dinners, and public events. Limited funding will be available to mentors for engaging mentees in cultural opportunities.

  4. Alumni & Employer Mentors

    Program Overview

    Alumni mentors participating in fullCIRCLE are making a difference for their institution by providing the SU community with the means to change lives, communities, and the world for the better. Employer mentors also help our students by supporting and fostering their growth and development as professionals. Mentors work with a small number of students offering guidance, consistent support, and a positive example as a role model. Mentors encourage skill development in collaboration, career exploration, and intercultural exchange.

    Program Goals

    The social and professional responsibility alumni and employers feel to diversify the workplace and to give back to the community can be met by engaging in the fullCIRCLE Mentoring Program. Employers can apply their knowledge to help support students in their growth and development as professionals, as well as help their organizations gain visibility on campus and meet hiring goals. fullCIRCLE allows you to build relationships with students from historically underrepresented populations and recruit talent you have had a hand in shaping. 

    Program Mission

    To support the holistic development of students of color through intentional relationships with peers, faculty, staff, alumni and employers.

    2. To be a role model who shares personal and professional growth
    3. To guide students through their academic, social, and cultural journey

    Mentor Responsibilities

    1. Attend an online training session via webinar/teleconference before the academic year begins (details on date, time, platform, and how to connect will be provided accordingly)
    2. Maintain regular contact with mentees through personal meetings, events, phone, email, social media, office hours, etc.
    3. Provide business resources to mentees and connect them to people who can support their individual and professional needs

    Mentor Qualifications
